CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

It was one of the first questions Bliss asked when they returned to the station. A more detailed search and close scrutiny of both the bathroom and kitchen had revealed no visible blood spatters or drops, but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t need to return and re-examine the house if Catmore turned up dead. Horton had no reason to believe that but an itch between his shoulder blades said it was possible. Catmore’s disappearance alongside Anther’s made him very uneasy. His instinct also told him there was a great deal more to the art switch than they had originally considered.

He had retained the key to the house and given a receipt to the agent, who had the unenviable task of informing the prospective new owners that their move would be postponed. With the exception of one box, which Cantelli had transported to his car, the rest remained in situ. Fortunately, Catmore was methodical and had labelled all his boxes, of which there were only four. The one that now was in the CID operation room was labelled ‘Personal papers, photographs and books’. Horton wondered if it might give them more information about Dorothy. Cantelli was going through it while Horton updated Bliss. Horton was also keen to hear what Nicola Bolton had learned, but that wouldn’t be until Monday. She had phoned Walters to say she was hot on the trail and needed a couple more days before she could run through the information with them.

PCs Bailey and Seaton had interviewed Catmore’s next-door neighbours and those living opposite and, finding a couple of people at home, had been able to establish that Catmore drove a grey Ford Fiesta, which wasn’t parked along the road. No one knew the registration number, but Walters was getting that from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and would put a call out for it. Horton also reported to Bliss that the woman over the road had seen Catmore leave the house on Tuesday evening at about six thirty, but she had no idea when he had returned — she didn’t spend her life looking out of the window, she had more important things to do. But Bailey had established that when she had taken her dog for a shit later that evening, just after nine, she hadn’t seen any lights on.

Catmore’s bed had been made up, so it was probable that he had gone missing on Tuesday night. Anther was likely to have disappeared that same night. Although they didn’t know that for certain, he hadn’t been there yesterday morning when they had searched his flat and gallery.

Horton hadn’t believed that Catmore was involved in the art switch, but now he wasn’t so sure. Bliss pointedly reminded him that she had requested Catmore to be reinterviewed, which he had failed to do, and that as a result the villains could have slipped through their fingers. Horton didn’t see much point in telling Bliss he had been otherwise engaged. He started to think that maybe he had made an error in not prioritizing another interview with Noel Catmore.
